Know Your Knee

Did you know, that the knee is the largest joint in the human body.

Tis a fabulous work of art. The knee is made up of four main things- bones, cartilage, ligaments and menisci.

Lets dkg a bit deeper. The knee is a hinge joint, almost something similar to the way how a door at your home or office works. It is entirely enclosed ina layer of tissue called as capsule, which is covered on the inside ey a layer called as synomum. The synovium releases the knee joint fluid called as synovial fluid.

Bones

The knee joint is made by the junction between the thigh bone femauri the leg or shin bone (tibia), with the knee cap (patella) sitting in front of it.

Cartilage

The ends of the thigh and shin bones are covered bya suppery and smooth layer, called as the cartilage or more specifically the articular cartilage.

Ligaments

The ligaments connect the bones together and keep them stable they act like ropes holding together the bones in the knee joint. The 4 major ligaments important for the knee function are- the 2 cruciates (acl- anterior cruciate ligament& pcl - posterior cruciate igament) & the2 collaterals (mcl- medial collateral ligament & lcl - lateral collateral ligament).

Meniscus

There are two of thea (plural -menisc), which act as shock absorbers in the knee. They are tough and rubbery cushions for the knee joint.

  • The major muscles around the knee include
  • The quadriceps on the front of the thigh
  • The hamstrings on the back of the thigh
